What is Psychotherapeutic Counselling?

Psychotherapeutic Counselling offers you something different from talking things over with family or friends. Family and friends mean well, however they very often want us to behave in a certain way or expect us to conform to an underlying 'hidden' agenda.

A counsellor is a professionally trained person you can talk to in confidence and whose full attention will be focussed on you without any judgement or expectation of how you must be. This kind of attention is rare in this fast-moving world and it is this particular quality and care that many people find so helpful and healing when they begin counselling.

Seeing a psychotherapeutic counsellor is different from seeing a doctor. The counsellor doesn't 'do' anything to you. It may be more helpful to see counselling as a collaboration between two people. Some people haven't spoken before about the things that concern them most and the counsellor provides a safe, confidential environment for people to discuss their most personal thoughts and feelings in an atmosphere of trust and respect.

You may, at times, look at certain difficulties in your life and you may also discover strengths and qualities in yourself that you didn't ever realise you had. The important thing to remember is that you are supported by the counsellor and are not on your own. Counselling helps people make the changes in their lives that they have been unable to make before.
